Paying in Vietnam: From USDT to Cash Dong
Vietnam is moving quickly toward digital payments, but cash VND still works everywhere. For a foreigner without a Vietnamese bank account the best strategy is cash dong from USDT plus an international card.
Cash VND: The Primary Payment Method
Cash is accepted at 100% of venues: from five-star hotels to street stalls. Small notes of 10,000–50,000 VND are needed for markets and tuk-tuks; large notes of 200,000–500,000 VND for rentals and hotels. Keep a 3–4 day cash reserve: not all ATMs operate around the clock.
- Street food and markets: cash only
- Xe om (motorbike taxi): cash only
- Small guesthouses and homestays: cash preferred
- Large shopping malls: cards and cash
VietQR and MoMo: Digital Payments for Foreigners
VietQR is Vietnam's interbank QR system linked to local accounts. MoMo is the largest e-wallet with 50+ million users. Both services require a Vietnamese phone number and a local bank account. Foreigners without these cannot use them.
Do not ask Vietnamese friends to accept payment via their MoMo and hand you cash — this creates tax and legal risks for them.
Visa/MC Cards in Vietnam in 2024
International Visa and Mastercard are accepted at 3-star-and-above hotels, larger restaurants, and shopping malls. Conversion to VND uses the payment network rate plus your issuing bank's fee (1–3%). Mir cards do not work in Vietnam.
- Accepted: Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay
- Not accepted: Mir, sanctioned cards
- ATM withdrawal fee: 50,000–110,000 VND
- Best ATMs for foreigners: Vietcombank, HSBC
USDT as a Source of Dong: The Flow
The flow is simple: USDT to the Legendex wallet, rate locked, cash VND collected from a local partner. This is faster than bank exchange and more cost-effective than airport tourist counters where the spread reaches 5–7%. For long-term stays it is convenient to exchange 500–1,000 USDT once a month.
- Create an order on Legendex specifying the USDT amount
- Transfer USDT — confirmation within 10–30 minutes
- Collect cash VND from a partner in your city
- Store reserves securely (room safe or money belt)
What to Do If You Run Out of Money
If you run out of cash late at night: find a 24-hour Vietcombank or BIDV ATM (located near major shopping malls). If your card fails, Western Union and MoneyGram accept transfers in Ho Chi Minh City (at Vietcombank branches). The fastest emergency option is to receive USDT from a friend and exchange it via Legendex.
