Tbilisi with USDT: Finances from Day One
Tbilisi has long welcomed expats with crypto — open banks, an active exchange market, and low prices make it one of the best destinations in the region. Here is how to set up your finances from day one.
First Week: Cash and Basic Expenses
In the first days you will need cash lari: rent deposit, groceries, transport. Budget 500–800 GEL for the first week per person. Exchange 200–300 USDT in cash at a money changer right after arrival — the airport rate is 3–5% worse, it is better to reach the city first.
- Metro: 1 GEL per ride, Metromoney card — 2 GEL
- Weekly groceries (1 person): 80–150 GEL at Carrefour or Fresco
- One-bedroom flat in the centre: 900–1,500 GEL/month, deposit = 1 month
- Cafe lunch: 15–30 GEL, restaurant dinner: 40–80 GEL
Opening an Account at TBC or BOG: What You Need
A foreigner can open an account at TBC or BOG with a passport — no residence permit required. TBC opens an account at a branch in 20–30 minutes; BOG offers an online application via the app. A Visa/Mastercard debit card is issued immediately or by courier in 2–3 days.
- Passport: required, international passport for non-residents
- Tax ID (PIN): issued free at RS.ge in 10 minutes
- Proof of address: rental agreement or utility bill
- Initial deposit: TBC — from 0 GEL, BOG — from 10 GEL
Renting a Flat: in Lari or USD
In Tbilisi some landlords quote in USD, others in GEL. If the price is in USD and you pay from USDT, the conversion is minimal: pay in USD cash or by transfer. If the price is in GEL — convert USDT via WExchange or a cash exchanger the day before payment.
- Centre (Vera, Vake, Saburtalo): 800–1,500 GEL/month for a one-bedroom
- Outer districts (Gldani, Samgori): 400–700 GEL/month
- Short-term rental: 50–90 USD/night on Airbnb in the centre
- Negotiation is welcome: cash payment often gets 5–10% discount
Regular Exchange: Partial or Bulk Strategy
If your USDT income is stable, choose one of two conversion strategies. Frequent small exchanges are convenient for budget control; bulk batches give a better rate.
- Weekly 200–500 USDT: easy to budget, slightly worse rate
- Monthly 1,000–3,000 USDT: rate better by 0.3–0.5%, cash buffer needed
- OTC from 5,000 USDT: individual rate, arranged through a WExchange manager
Sending Money to Europe or Russia from Georgia
From Georgia, transfers to Armenia, Azerbaijan, UAE, and the EU are available via SWIFT without restrictions. Transfers to Russia work through a limited set of Georgian banks (Liberty Bank, TBC in some cases) and money transfer systems (Unistream, Zolotaya Korona). USDT → back to crypto is the fastest option for Russia.
- To EU: SEPA via TBC/BOG, fee 5–15 EUR, 1–2 days
- To UAE: SWIFT, fee $15–25, 1–3 days
- To Russia in cash: GEL → RUB via aggregators, negotiable rate
- Back to crypto: USDT sent to any exchange in 1–5 min
