Money in Bali: from USDT to everyday expenses
Bali operates several payment systems simultaneously: QRIS for digital payments in shops, cash IDR for markets and small cafes, USD for large deals. For Russians without working international cards USDT is the primary source for all of these.
Rupiah for daily use: where to source it
Three working sources: ATMs, authorised money changers and crypto exchange. For Russians with blocked cards only crypto exchange (USDT → IDR via us) and sometimes money changers (if you have cash currency) are relevant.
QRIS: Indonesia's unified QR payment system
QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard) is accepted at most restaurants, shops, petrol stations and online services in Bali. To use it you need an Indonesian wallet (GoPay, OVO, Dana) or an Indonesian bank account — for non-residents this is difficult but possible through BCA or Bank Sinarmas with a KITAS.
Practical workaround: top up GoPay at 7-Eleven (accepts cash rupiah). Get cash rupiah via USDT exchange with us — and you have a working QR wallet without a bank account.
Money changers in Bali: where rates are better
- Authorised exchangers (PT Dipta, PT Berkah) — good rates, licence can be checked
- Rates are better in Denpasar and Ubud than in tourist-heavy Kuta and Seminyak
- Signs of scammers: incredible rate on the board, "0% commission", insistent bill counting
- Always count the money yourself before leaving the exchanger
USDT as a financial reserve: strategy
Don't convert everything at once: the rupiah is an emerging-market currency with depreciation potential. A sensible strategy: keep 70–80% in USDT, convert to IDR 4–6 weeks of expenses at a time. For large one-off payments (annual rent, buying a motorbike) — convert on demand through Private Desk.
Common money mistakes in Bali
- Exchanging everything at Ngurah Rai Airport: the worst rate on the island — only enough for a taxi
- Not having cash for the first days: many arrival services are cash only
- Trusting money changers with "Best Rate No.1" signs: verify by licence
- Not checking the notes: counterfeit 100,000 IDR bills are encountered in tourist areas
- ATM fees: usually 50,000–75,000 IDR per withdrawal — better to withdraw large amounts
